Crystal Chandeliers

Four centuries later, the crystal chandelier remains one of the few lighting fixtures capable of transforming a room, adding depth, texture and a truly captivating play of light.

At the crossroads of craftsmanship and decorative art, crystal chandeliers have stood the test of time: from the 17th century, when they adorned the ceilings of Europe’s grand royal courts, to today, when they grace your living room, entrance hall, bedroom… they remain the only lighting fixtures capable of turning any room into a theatre of light.

Whether you’re looking for a grand antique chandelier adorned with crystal pendants, a minimalist contemporary design, or a flush-mount ceiling light: our curated selection brings together pieces sourced from the last remaining European manufacturers keeping this traditional craftsmanship alive. Every piece is entirely handcrafted.

The Different Types of Crystal Chandeliers

From traditional chandeliers adorned with crystal pendants, direct heirs to the splendour of the 18th century, to more understated contemporary creations, not forgetting ceiling lights and monumental chandeliers designed for exceptional spaces;

The term “crystal chandelier” actually covers a wide variety of designs, suited to very different uses, spaces and tastes.

To help you choose yours, here are the 4 main types worth knowing about, and what they’re best suited for:

1 – Traditional Crystal Chandeliers (with pendants)

Now the most iconic type of crystal chandelier… the pendant chandelier first appeared in European royal courts in the 17th century, before becoming THE ultimate symbol of refinement in palaces and grand private residences during the 18th century.

Its defining features?
⇒ A central frame, usually made of bronze or brass.
⇒ From which hand-cut crystal pendants hang in various shapes: pears, teardrops, plaques, octagons and daggers.

Each pendant acts as a prism, multiplying the light of candles. And today, the light of our modern bulbs.

This is what preserves the decorative and theatrical quality that has made these traditional chandeliers so treasured over the centuries. Whether they originate from France, Italy or Bohemia.

💡 For a pendant chandelier crafted in the finest tradition, we recommend chandelier X, Y or Z.

2 – Modern and Contemporary Crystal Chandeliers

Breaking free from Baroque conventions, designers began reinventing the crystal chandelier in the 20th century… creating more geometric and sculptural forms. Gone is the opulence of the Hall of Mirrors, replaced by more restrained, minimalist pieces.

This allows modern crystal chandeliers to blend just as naturally into designer interiors as into eclectic settings, where they complement antique furniture.

💡 Choosing this type of chandelier means retaining the noble material and optical brilliance of crystal while embracing a contemporary aesthetic. For that, take a look at chandelier X by Y. Or chandelier X.

3 – Crystal Ceiling Lights

If your room has a low ceiling that doesn’t allow for a hanging chandelier, a flush-mount crystal ceiling light is the perfect alternative:

It offers both the richness of crystal’s light refraction & the quality of the material, in a more compact design fitted directly against your ceiling.

Where to use one?
⇒ They’re often found in smaller spaces: hallways, bedrooms, entrance halls or bathrooms.
⇒ But they’re also an excellent choice when renovating older apartments with limited ceiling height.

Their defining features?
Some designs borrow the hanging crystal pendants of a traditional chandelier, while others take a more contemporary approach with disc or spherical shapes.

💡 For a crystal ceiling light with traditional pendants, we offer, among others, model X by Y. And for a more modern style, X.

4 – Grand Crystal Chandeliers for Exceptional Spaces

Some spaces call for a chandelier worthy of their grandeur: cathedral-style entrance halls, double-height living rooms, monumental staircases, conservatories, reception halls, opera houses, palaces, etc.

This is where grand crystal chandeliers, often made to order, come into their own (outside the standard catalogue) in some of the world’s most prestigious settings.

⇒ Take the grand chandelier at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, gifted by Queen Victoria: 750 lights and approximately 4.5 tonnes.

⇒ The chandelier in the auditorium of the Palais Garnier in Paris, weighing almost 7 tonnes.

⇒ Or even the monumental chandelier created by Baccarat for its 250th anniversary: 8.40m tall, 4.60m in diameter, with 410 lights.

As you’ve probably gathered:
Between the number of lights (bulbs), diameter, height, weight… these chandeliers require both a detailed technical assessment and a budget to match.

The Great Crystal Chandelier Manufacturers

The art of crystal chandelier-making developed in Europe from the 17th century onwards, centred around a handful of major manufacturing regions, each with its own identity, techniques and signature style.

And even today, 3 major traditions dominate the high-end crystal chandelier market:

Baccarat & Its French Crystal Chandeliers

When we think of crystal chandeliers, Baccarat is the first name that comes to mind. And with good reason, given its many monumental creations around the world: royal palaces, embassies, grand hotels, etc.

The Maison presented its first pieces as early as 1827. But it was in 1855, at the Paris Universal Exhibition, that Baccarat established itself as the benchmark with a 140-light chandelier, still regarded as a reference in the industry today.

A remarkable display of craftsmanship that instantly established the Maison as the world’s leading crystal manufacturer in chandelier-making. A position it has held, unchallenged, ever since.

And for private clients & professionals looking to enjoy this French luxury, Baccarat has created more modest designs (but every bit as iconic!) such as its Zénith chandelier and Mille Nuits collection.

The Czech Republic and Its Bohemian Crystal Chandeliers… with Unrivalled Sparkle

Bohemian crystal is renowned worldwide as the most radiant & brilliant crystal ever produced.

Naturally, this rare optical quality, unrivalled precision of cutting and famous designs such as the Maria Theresa-style balloon chandeliers (adorned with hand-cut crystal pendants);

Quickly made Bohemia a benchmark and a favoured supplier of crystal chandeliers to Europe’s imperial courts.

A reputation that endures today, as a handful of rare manufacturers continue to preserve this expertise passed down from generation to generation… creating sumptuous pieces that do more than simply illuminate our homes: they decorate them.

And Of Course, for Venetian Style… Murano Glass Chandeliers

Now, yes:
Although Murano glass is not technically crystal in the strict sense, its name is inseparable from the history of Europe’s great lighting fixtures.

These chandeliers are instantly recognisable by their hot-blown glass arms, colourful flowers & leaves and deliberately exuberant character.

A little cultural insight:
In Venetian, the term “Ciocca” refers to the classic Venetian chandelier, adorned with glass flowers, leaves and branches. It’s a word you may hear alongside the expression “el liogo de le ciòcche” during a trip to Venice, referring to the workshops where Venetian chandeliers are assembled.

How to Choose the Right Crystal Chandelier: The 4 Criteria

Because unfortunately, no: choosing a crystal chandelier isn’t just a question of aesthetics.

For a chandelier to sit perfectly within your interior and cast harmonious light throughout the room, you need to consider:
⇒ The dimensions of your space.
⇒ Your ceiling height.
⇒ The number of lights.
⇒ And the type of crystal.

Criterion No. 1: What Size Chandelier for Your Room?

For sizing, the rule used by interior designers is to:
1 : Add together the length & width of your room (in metres).
2 : Then convert the result into centimetres.
3 : To obtain the approximate diameter of your chandelier.

An example?
⇒ If your room measures 4m by 5m, aim for a chandelier approximately 90cm in diameter.
⇒ 4m + 5m = 9m (90cm).

Bonus tip for your dining room:
💡 The diameter of your chandelier should, as a general rule, be between half and two-thirds the width of your table. Never more, to maintain a balanced visual flow.

Criterion No. 2: How Many Lights Do You Need?

The number of lights (bulbs) in your chandelier will depend on both the area to be illuminated AND your ceiling height.

To guide you, here are a few general ranges:
⇒ A 6-light chandelier is suitable for a room of 15 to 20m².
⇒ An 8- to 12-light model for a room of 25 to 40m².
⇒ Beyond that, consider chandeliers with more than 18 lights.

Also keep in mind that:
💡 Modern LED bulbs produce more light at the same wattage than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Criterion No. 3: The Ideal Hanging Height? It Depends on the Room…

Above your dining table:
⇒ Hang your crystal chandelier 75 to 90cm above the tabletop.
This height provides proper lighting for your table without obstructing your view (or that of your guests).

In a room without a table (bedroom, bathroom, entrance hall, staircase) :
⇒ The bottom of your chandelier should be at least 2.10m above the floor. Ideally, over 2.30m to preserve a sense of space.

And in rooms with very high ceilings:
⇒ You can hang your chandelier lower so that it doesn’t look lost in the space.

Caring for a Crystal Chandelier: How to Preserve It for Generations?

To preserve its sparkle, your crystal chandelier deserves to be treated like royalty, with regular care.

And this royal treatment involves 3 essential principles you ABSOLUTELY need to remember (unless you want to ruin your chandelier forever) :

1 : Before dismantling it, lay a thick blanket on the floor underneath, in case a crystal pendant falls, for example.

2 : ALWAYS clean with a microfibre cloth (or a soft sponge) and lukewarm water at 30–35°C (crystal cannot withstand the thermal shock caused by hot water).

3 : Harsh chemicals and detergents are strictly FORBIDDEN: their corrosive properties can damage the crystal, as well as gold- or silver-plated fittings. Use a few drops of soft black soap instead; that works perfectly well.

4 (bonus) : It may seem obvious, but always remember to switch off the electricity at the circuit breaker before doing any work.

How often?
⇒ Dry dusting with a feather duster (without dismantling) every week.
⇒ A thorough clean (with dismantling) approximately every 6 months.
